Vol. 160 No. 16

Written Answers. - Industrial Accidents.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of industrial accidents in each year from and including 1950, and if he will classify the information under the heads (a) fatal, (b) serious, (c) working days lost, and (d) compensation paid.

The number of reportable fatal and non-fatal accidents in industry each year will be found in the Annual Reports on the Work of the Factory Inspection Service, which are compiled by the Department of Industry and Commerce and are presented to both Houses of the Oireachtas. Statistics of accidents in industry are not compiled under the description "serious", nor is information available of the number of working days lost.

Particulars of the compensation paid in respect of reportable industrial accidents are not separately available. Statistics of Workmen's Compensation are compiled by the Central Statistics Office. Figures for the years 1947-1953 were published in the September 1955 issue of the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin and I am informed that corresponding figures for 1954 will be published in the December issue of the journal.
