Vol. 162 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Ambulance Drivers.

asked the Minister for Health whether it is the policy of his Department to saction the employment of retired persons, who have adequate pensions, as ambulance drivers in County Galway, although many younger men with families are unemployed.

The employment of individual ambulance drivers who are classed as minor officers under the Local Government (Minor Officers) Order, 1943, does not require my sanction. The appointment of ambulance drivers is a matter for the local authority. I am informed by the county council that, so far as they are aware, none of the eight permanent ambulance drivers employed by them is in receipt of a pension.
