The number of arrivals in the State by sea, rail, road (motor omnibus services) and air (excluding transit passengers) for each month from January, 1949, to March, 1957, are shown in the appended table.
The figures refer to all incoming passengers by these routes and, therefore, include Irish residents returning from places outside the State as well as visitors to this country. The figures do not include persons travelling across the northern border of the State in private motor vehicles or on foot. Estimates of the number of arrivals by private motor vehicles in each of the years 1952 to 1956 are as follows:—

These figures are not available in respect of earlier years nor can estimates be made for shorter periods than a year. It must be observed that these latter estimates are based on a sample inquiry and are therefore subject to a sampling error. The figures are derived from a count of the vehicles and estimates of the average number of person in each vehicle, obtained in the passanger card inquiry.
