Vol. 162 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Six County Lorries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that lorries from the Six Counties are allowed across the Border on passes, and that they are operating here to the detriment of our roads and are depriving the railway companies and private hauliers of business, and if he will arrange to have this traffic discontinued.

The passes to which the Deputy refers are temporary dispensations from the import duty that would otherwise have to be paid on the importation of a lorry. Lorries so admitted are not permitted to carry for reward within the State.

Reciprocal facilities are given to our lorries entering the Six-County area. The arrangements necessary to facilitate cross-Border traffic will be coming under review, in a comprehensive way, in the early future, and it is not intended to make any changes in the meanwhile.
