Vol. 164 No. 9

Garda Síochána Pensions Order, 1957—Motion of Approval.

I move:—

That the Dáil hereby approves of the Garda Síochána Pensions Order, 1957, made on the 8th day of November, 1957, by the Minister for Justice, with the sanction of the Minister for Finance under Section 13 of the Police Forces Amalgamation Act, 1925.

The Garda Síochána Pensions Order, 1957, which I am asking the House to approve, is related with the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1956. As Deputies are aware, that Act provided for increases in pensions to State servants who had retired prior to the 1st November, 1952. When the provisions of the Act came to be applied to a particular ex-Superintendent of the Garda Síochána who had retired in 1951 and who was also in receipt of an Army pension, it was found that the aggregate of his dual pensions was held, under existing Pensions Orders, to a limit of two-thirds of his Garda retirement pay. No provision was made in the 1956 Act to raise this limit to two-thirds of his notional pay on the 1st November, 1952, which would give him an increase of pension in conformity with that given to other State servants. The purpose of the present Order is to repair that omission.

We have no objection to the proposal. I am glad that the Minister has taken steps to implement it. This is a step in the right direction to assist people who have rendered very valuable service to the country and the House is being given an opportunity of approving of it.

Question put and agreed to.
