Vol. 165 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in North Mayo.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when rural electrification will be extended to the following townlands, which appear on the E.S.B. maps for the Bohola area in County Mayo: Ballylahan, Cloonconra, Oughtagh, Gurteens, Carragolda, Laughtadurkan, and Clooninshin.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the E.S.B. will extend rural electrification to the townlands of Carragolda, Laughtadurkan, Oughtagh, Carracastle, Ballylahan, Cloonconra and Gurteens in the Toonone area, County Mayo, before work in the area finishes, considering that practically all residents of these townlands have agreed to be connected.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 34 and 35 together.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that all the townlands mentioned in the Deputies' questions are included in Bohola rural area which was developed under the rural electrification scheme in 1950-51 but that when the area was being developed the householders in the townlands in question showed little interest in taking supply.

The board are prepared to extend supply to these townlands as post-development work and as the capital costs are likely to be considerable, it may be necessary for the board to quote special service charges to many of the householders, in addition to the standard rate of fixed charge. I understand that the householders concerned will shortly be given a further opportunity of taking supply and, if a sufficient number of them accept the terms quoted, the board hope to have the work of extending supply carried out by a construction crew which is now operating in an adjoining rural area.
