asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the fact that members of the Garda Síochána are among the lowest paid of police forces, and that so many young men are resigning from the force to seek employment abroad, he will investigate the matter with a view to offering more attractive conditions of service such as appear to apply in Britain, Kenya, Rhodesia, and Canada.
As the Deputy knows, a country with our limited resources cannot afford to provide public servants with as attractive conditions in the matter of pay and allowances as countries with greater resources, much as we might like to do so.
Can the Minister hold out any hope that the important post of Garda Síochána will be made more attractive, in view of the evidence that he has before him and the evidence that is available in his Department or, certainly, the evidence that the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána can give him, that a large number of young men are leaving the force and going to Rhodesia, Kenya, Britain and Canada? The Minister must know that these men are going as well-trained policemen.
For the reason which I have just given, I am afraid I cannot hold out any immediate hope.
Perhaps the Minister would keep it in mind?
I certainly shall.
