Vol. 165 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Dairying.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in relation to the dairying industry the number of males and females (a) employed in dairy farms, (b) self-employed, and (c) employed by creameries.

The particulars requested at (a) and (b) of the Deputy's question are not available, since data on the persons engaged in agriculture are not classified by "type of farm". In October, 1955, there were 3,693 males and 493 females employed by establishments included in the Census of Industrial Production under the industry heading "manufacture of creamery butter, cheese, condensed milk, chocolate crumb, ice cream and other edible milk products". It is estimated that in September, 1957, the total number of persons (males and females) engaged in this industry was 4,394.
