Vol. 165 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Evil Literature.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will introduce legislation to deal severely with persons who deal in, sell, display, or are in any way connected with the circulation of, foul literature, having regard to the views of the Hierarchy in this matter; further, if he will arrange for special recognition for the members of the Garda Síochána who seize, or take possession of, such evil literature, in order that this deplorable trade may be stopped.

The law as it stands is adequate to deal with publications which are obscene or which have been prohibited by the Censorship of Publications Acts, if the general public are prepared to co-operate. If the necessary co-operation is not forthcoming, I will be ready to consider further measures.

It is not proposed to adopt the suggestion contained in the latter part of the question.
