Vol. 165 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Exports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how much of the butter exported during 1957 had been held in cold storage since the previous year, and the amount of subsidy paid on such butter.

It would be a task of considerable magnitude to extract from the records of the Butter Marketing Committee the quantity of creamery butter exported during the year 1957 which had been in cold storage since the previous year. I can say, however, that the surplus of butter manufactured in the production year ended 30th April, 1957, was 129,897 cwt. of which 126, 747 cwt. were exported in 1957. It is estimated that the amount of the subsidy payable on the latter quantity of butter was about £1,124,000.
