Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Age Limit for Old Age Pensions.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will introduce legislation lowering the age limit for recipients of old age pensions to 65 years.

It is not proposed to introduce legislation on the lines indicated in the question.

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary will agree that if the age limit I suggest was agreed to, large numbers of people would be employed in the vacancies that occur. Surely he will agree that numerous people are unable to work before they reach 70 years of age. The age limit in England is 65. I shall put the question again and ask him to reconsider the position.

I would suggest that the Deputy would defer the matter until we have a debate on the cost and consequences of his question when the relevant Estimate comes before the House.
