The total productive area acquired by my Department for afforestation purposes in the Portroe district is 496 acres. Most of this land is being held for the present as part of the plantable reserve of Silvermines Forest but an area of 43 acres in Kilparteen is being planted in the current season and three men are employed on this work. The planting programme for next year has not yet been settled but it is expected that the major part of the planting programme for Silvermines Forest will be in the Portroe district.
