Vol. 169 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cable Laying in County Louth.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) the areas in County Louth in which cable laying is in progress or is contemplated, and (b) the procedure by which persons are recruited for employment on cable laying operations.

Cable laying is at present in progress at Dundalk and work in laying a cable between Drogheda and An Uaimh is expected to commence within the next two months. Any additional labour force required for these works will be recruited from persons nominated as suitable by the local employment exchange.

Can the Minister say will this cable laying obviate the great delays which are being caused in Dundalk? Will it mean that applications for telephone installations will be expedited? Further, can the Minister say when the present operations in Dundalk will be completed?

I cannot give that information at the moment. In regard to the delays, they will, of course, be obviated when the work is completed.

In regard to the second part of the question can the Minister say whether any persons other than those in receipt of unemployment assistance have been recruited for employment on this scheme?

Nobody has been recruited except persons nominated as suitable by the employment exchange.
