Vol. 169 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distribution of Wheat Fund.

andMr. Hughes asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, after disposing of any surplus that there may be in the wheat crop of this year, he will have distributed to the wheat growers any surplus of cash left over in the fund formed by the deductions ordered by him from the price of wheat.

I cannot say, at this stage, how any surplus fund that might arise will be disposed of, except to assure the Deputies that it will be used solely in the growers' interest.

If a surplus is found —and from what we are told, although the Minister is supposed to stop 12/-, we know he is going to stop 6/- a barrel—if there is a surplus why should it not be restored to the wheat growers? It should not be carried forward because we know that if it is carried forward it will probably disappear into the Central Fund.

Since the Deputy can estimate so accurately, I am sure he will conclude that there should not be any surplus.

I am delighted the Minister said I estimated it so accurately.
