Vol. 169 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance of Hired Self-Drive Motor Cars.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the insurance cover for hired self-drive motor cars does not include insurance cover for passengers therein; and, if so, if he will introduce legislation at an early date to amend Part V of the Road Traffic Act, 1933, so as to compel the owners of such hired self-drive cars to provide cover for passengers legitimately travelling therein.

It is not correct to suggest that the insurance cover for all hired self-drive cars does not include insurance cover for passengers. A number of reputable firms engaged in the business offer, in their advertisements, personal accident cover for both drivers and passengers.

The question of the scope of compulsory motor insurance is being considered in connection with current proposals for new road traffic legislation.
