Vol. 170 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation in Pettigo Area.

Mr. Brennan

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the quantity of Land in the Pettigo district in the possession of the forestry branch and not yet planted, and (b) the area of land in the course of acquisition in the area for afforestation; and if he will speed up operations in the area.

Pettigo State forest comprises an area of 3,441 acres, 2,238 acres of which have been planted to date. The balance of 1,203 acres was classified as follows at date of acquisition: 43 acres plantable; 93 acres acres unplantable bare land; 93 acres other unproductive land. With the improvement of planting techniques and development of mechanical preparation of ground my Department has been planting for some years past on the areas formerly regarded as unplantable. This coming season 238 acres of this category of land are being prepared for planting.

As regards the prospects of acquisition in the district agreement has been reached to purchased two areas totalling 76 acres and the Department is negotiating purchase of a further area of 25 acres.

There have been big planting programmes at Pettigo forest in the past four years and the work will continue to be dealt with expeditiously.
