Vol. 171 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Carriage of Mail.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will make arrangements for the carriage of mail on the 7.20 a.m. train from Wexford to Dublin.

There is already a day-mail despatch from Wexford to Dublin at 3.47 p.m. and the night mail is despatched at the exceptionally favourable hour of 10 p.m. Both of the despatches secure excellent connections in the mails distribution organisation. In the circumstances the introduction of a further despatch from Wexford at 7.20 a.m., to cater for a small volume of late-night and early-morning postings, would not be justified.

What trouble is there about it?

The introduction of a further despatch would not be justified as only a small volume of mail would be involved. There is a despatch in the evening at 10 p.m.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider continuing the carriage of mail between Rosslare Harbour and Fishguard during the winter season.

I have examined the Deputy's suggestion. Because of the reduced frequency of sailing on this service during the winter months, it is not suitable for mails purposes. Even in the summer season the service is of very limited postal utility.
