Vol. 171 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Non-acceptance of American Dollars by Post Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why American dollars are not accepted by the Post Office.

American and also Canadian dollars are accepted at Shannon Airport Post Office, principally in order to meet the exceptional needs of transit passengers set down at the airport for a short period. This special arrangement is facilitated by the fact that the airport post office is housed in the same building as a bank. To introduce a similar facility generally at the remaining 2,260 post offices in the country would not be feasible, but I am prepared to examine the question of its extension to individual post offices where there is a reasonable demand for it and the circumstances lend themselves to its introduction.
