Vol. 171 No. 9

Referendum (Amendment) Bill, 1958—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the Referendum Acts, 1942 and 1946.— (Minister for Local Government.)

When will we see it?

It will be next Wednesday anyway before it comes out.

Next Wednesday.

Has it any bearing on Item No. 3?

An indirect bearing.

It should have.

It is not good enough to ask us to take it next Wednesday.

It certainly will not be taken until the House has an opportunity of considering it for a reasonable time. Make it Wednesday week. I can assure the Deputy that if it is not available in time, it will not be taken.

Could the Minister say anything about it?

It deals solely with changes in machinery for holding referenda.

Will it not be time enough on Wednesday week?

Are we saying Wednesday week?

Make it next Tuesday week.

With the same reservation that the Minister offered.

We do not usually sit the day after a holiday.

I did not give any thought to that. However, we can order it for Tuesday week.

Without prejudice either to the holiday or the other.

Second Stage ordered for Tuesday, 9th December, 1958.
