Vol. 172 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Losses Due to Fluke.

15.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the serious losses to farmers as a result of fluke; and what he proposes to do in the matter in view of the great loss of live stock, especially of sheep.

I am aware from reports received in my Department that losses in sheep from liver fluke have been heavier this season than in recent years, as a result of the very wet spring and summer which we had last year.

My Department, by means of special publicity and in co-operation with veterinary practitioners, has been advising farmers as to prevention and treatment. It is proposed to continue these measures for as long as may be necessary.

Would the Minister state if the veterinary section of his Department have supplied him with an up-to-date report as to the losses of sheep farmers in this regard? Might I further inquire if the Minister has any proposals in mind which will assist sheep farmers who have lost stock to have that stock replaced? No amount of publicity will replace stock and I am sure the farmers took every possible precaution. Might I inquire if the Minister has any such proposals in mind?

Ownership of land in association with farming is always subject to losses of this nature. That is one of the reasons why people like the Deputy stay away from the land.

That is the most stupid reply I have ever heard from the Minister.

And it is very helpful to the sheep farmers.
