Vol. 173 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Road Improvement Grant.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider making a special allocation for the improvement of roads to County Wexford in view of its tourist potential.

There are no funds at my disposal from which a special allocation as mentioned by the Deputy could be made.

Could the Minister say if any other county, such as his own county of Donegal, receives a special grant for tourists?

What is the definition of a tourist county?

The counties that are now receiving special tourist grants were laid down at the time this fund was made available. Donegal is one of those counties and Wexford, unfortunately for itself, is not.

Would the Minister reconsider the whole position?

Is there any reason why the Minister could not include Wexford?

It is not nice enough.

As I have said, when the fund was established, certain counties were brought in. Regard was had to various considerations such as tourist potential, lack of development, unemployment and the generally poor state of the western seaboard counties as a whole.

And the decline of the Fianna Fáil vote in these counties.

Why did you keep it on when you were in Government?

I see the Taoiseach nodding his head. He seems to remember the bargains.

I remember the tactics of the Deputy.
