Vol. 173 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Atomic Energy Committee.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if the examination by Departments of the recommendations of the Atomic Energy Committee has yet concluded; and, if so, what decision has been arrived at by the Government on the matter.

The recommendations contained in the Report of the Atomic Energy Committee have been examined by the Departments concerned and have been considered by the Government. The recommendations made by the committee in relation to the application of radiation and radioactive isotopes to agriculture have, in general, been accepted. The Government have decided, however, that in present circumstances: (1) no action should be taken to acquire a research reactor; (2) it would be undesirable to establish units for the therapeutic use of radioactive isotopes in general hospitals; and (3) facilities for the use of radioactive isotopes for diagnostic purposes should not be extended to hospitals outside Dublin.

Can the Taoiseach state the circumstances which operated against acquiring a reactor?

I think the best way to put it is that it would not be justifiable at the moment to spend that sum of money. There are changes taking place and the immediate need for the reactor is not there.
