asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each county for a recent period (a) the approximate number of permanent or full-time agricultural employees, (b) the approximate number of agricultural tractors, and (c) the approximate number of holdings of 20 acres and over.
Written Answers. - Agricultural Statistics.
The particulars requested at (a) and (b) of the Deputy's question are given in the following statement for 1st June, 1955. The classification scheme for size of holding adopted in the compilation of agricultural statistics groups together all holdings of 15-30 acres and hence it is not possible to provide the figures requested at (c) of the question. Particulars of the numbers of holdings over 15 acres and over 30 acres have been entered in the statement.
Reliable county estimates for the years 1956 and 1957 are not available because of the reduction in the coverage of the agricultural enumeration in those years while the county estimates for 1958 have not yet been compiled. Estimated totals for the State as a whole for 1956 and 1957 are given for permanent male agricultural labourers and for agricultural tractors together with a provisional estimate of the number of permanent male agricultural labourers in June, 1958.
(a) Numbers of permanent male agricultural labourers; (b) Numbers of agricultural tractors and (c) Numbers of agricultural holdings over 15 acres and over 30 acres in each county on 1 June, 1955.
