Vol. 174 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Industries.

3.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state with reference to the new industries which involve a total investment of approximately £4 million, referred to by him in a speech in Dublin on 4th February, 1959, (a) the total number of persons employed, (b) the number of those industries which are situated in undeveloped areas and (c) the number which cater solely for export or the major portion of whose output is for export; and what percentage of the £4 million was made available in grants or loans.

The estimates by the promoters of employment in the industrial undertakings to which the Question refers visualise a total labour force of from 2,500 to 2,900 persons when all the factories are in full production. Seven of the undertakings are located in areas to which the Undeveloped Areas Acts apply. Fourteen undertakings are catering or propose to cater wholly or mainly for the export trade. Grants approved under the Undeveloped Areas Acts, 1952 and 1957, or the Industrial Grants Act, 1956, and loans approved by the Industrial Credit Co. Ltd. amount to approximately 16% of the estimated aggregate capital investment of £4 million.
