Vol. 174 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kildare Housing Requirements.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state separately in respect of the Athy and Naas Urban District Council areas and rural areas of County Kildare the number of houses still required to satisfy the housing demands as ascertained at the last housing survey, and the date of the survey.

The last general housing survey in Athy Urban District was carried out in 1945 and the housing needs of working class families then disclosed have been substantially satisfied. The Council are at present considering the provision of a small scheme for the purpose of clearing the balance of unfit houses in the town and to meet current needs as disclosed by applications received on the occurrence of vacancies.

A survey undertaken in 1957 in Naas Urban District disclosed a need for a scheme of sixteen houses, plans for which are now being prepared by the urban district council.

In the case of the Kildare County Health District, a balance of 73 houses would be required to meet the housing needs of working class families on the basis of the last general survey which was undertaken in 1945. Since then, limited local surveys have been carried out from time to time in relation to schemes being undertaken and local variations in the original estimates have resulted but without affecting the overall figures of the 1945 general survey.
