Vol. 174 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Roads in Bundoran Area.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the importance of Lough Derg as a place of pilgrimage, and as it is no longer accessible by rail, he will consider making available a special grant for the improvement of the Bundoran-Belleek road which is now the only means of access for visitors from the West and South West proceeding to and from the island.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the serious congestion on the roads in and around Bundoran as the result of the closing down of the Great Northern Railway line, he will consider making a special grant for the widening and improvement of the Main Street, Bundoran, from the G.S.R. road to the Allingham Hotel at the West End, Bundoran, including the Bundoran Bridge and Church corner, which have now become traffic hazards and bottle necks during the height of the tourist season.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 45 and 46 together.

Donegal County Council were notified on 24th January, 1959, of a grant of £75,000 for the present financial year to deal with special road problems arising from recent railway line closings in the county. At the same time the council were requested to prepare and submit a five year programme of road works designed to meet these problems. It is for the county council, in the first instance, to consider what roads should be included in their proposals.
