asked the Minister for Finance whether there is a duty on locks imported into this country; and, if so, to what extent.

Locks (including padlocks) suitable for doors and gates and component parts of such locks are liable to duty as shown at Ref. No. 141 of the Customs and Excise Tariff at the rate of 75% ad valorem, or, if of British or Canadian manufacture, at the preferential rate of 50% ad valorem. Combination locks, electrically operated locks, railway rolling stock locks, motor vehicle locks, furniture locks and refrigerator locks are excluded from this duty. Motor vehicle door locks are liable to duty as shown at Ref. No. 154(h) of the Tariff at the rate of 50% ad valorem and, in addition, to Special Import Levy as shown at Ref. No. 564 or 639 of the Customs and Excise Tariff Supplement at the rate of 15% ad valorem.
