Vol. 175 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Works of Art.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware that the decision of An Chomhairle Ealaíon not to recommend for purchase by county councils or vocational bodies any of the works showing at the current exhibition of the Royal Hibernian Academy is regarded as a reflection on the competence of the members of the Academy; if he will state what artistic standing is possessed by the members of An Chomhairle who were responsible for the recommendation; and if he will ensure that, in future, the selections of the works of Irish artists be made following an inspection at the annual exhibition by all members of An Chomhairle.

The decision of An Chomhairle Ealaíon in the matter referred to in the Deputy's Question was taken by the Council in the course of their operation of their scheme of grants for the purchase by local authorities of works by Irish artists. Having regard to the provisions of the Arts Act, 1951, the operation of that scheme is entirely within the discretion of An Chomhairle Ealaíon. I have no function in the matter.
