Vol. 177 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creation of New Jobs.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of new jobs created in this country since 20th March, 1957.

Comprehensive information is not available concerning the total number of new jobs created in any period. With regard, however, to new industrial undertakings and extensions of existing undertakings, having a capital investment of not less than £10,000, which came to the notice of the Minister for Industry and Commerce as having commenced production in the period 20th March, 1957, to 30th September, 1959, the estimated amount of initial employment is 3,400 workers and the estimated potential is 6,000 workers.

The quarterly estimates of persons engaged in industries producing transportable goods indicate that by June, 1959, there were 8,500 more in employment than in March, 1957, 5,100 of the increase being in manufacturing industries.

The Parliamentary Secretary could not say what the net increase is, having regard to the fact that many have left the land?

That is a different question. The only information available on that point is as of March, 1958, and that information is contained in the report on employment and unemployment recently published.
