Vol. 177 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Limits: Base Lines.

7.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will make an early statement regarding the new base lines on the Irish coast from which fishery limits will be defined.

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government on 20th instant made an Order under the Maritime Jurisdiction Act, 1959, prescribing straight base lines for certain parts of the Irish coast. The Order, which was published yesterday, has been presented to both Houses.

From what date is the order in operation?

From the 1st January.

Was there any difficulty in bringing forward that date in view of the fact that the fishing season for herrings begins in October? That was the trouble last year on the South East coast.

There is an international obligation to give adequate notice of changes of this kind. I am informed that on the South-east Coast of Ireland the fishing does not ordinarily move within the old territorial limits until around the end of December or early January.
