Vol. 177 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Advisory Committee on Television.

51.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what are the functions and remuneration, if any, of the members of the Advisory Committee on Television set up by him; and whether the chairman of the committee is to be the chairman of the permanent authority to control radio and television.

The functions of the Television Advisory Committee are to advise and assist me in arranging so far as practicable on behalf of the proposed new statutory Authority which will control both sound broadcasting and television,

(a) for the supply of the equipment which will be required for the television-transmitter station which is to serve the Dublin area, for temporary Dublin studios and for the link between the station and the studios,

(b) in co-operation with the Commissioners of Public Works, for the provision of the building for the transmitter station which is to serve the Dublin area and of the building for the temporary Dublin studios, and

(c) to have the acquisition of the land which will be required for sites for, and for any necessary approach roads to, television-transmitter stations to serve areas outside the Dublin area put in hand immediately by the Commissioners of Public Works.

No remuneration has been fixed in respect of membership of the Committee.

As regards the last part of the question, it is the present intention that the members of the Committee should be invited to accept membership of the Authority when the latter body is being constituted and that the present Chairman of the Committee, if then available, should be invited to accept appointment as Chairman of the Authority.

All qualified in the Irish language?

That is a separate question.

That is a separate question. All such interests will be considered when the Authority is being established permanently.

52.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether his attention had been called to statements reported to have been made in Press interviews by the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Television as to his powers and functions; and whether these statements correctly represented the position.

I am not clear what statements the Deputy is referring to but I am sure that the Chairman of the Committee is in no doubt about the scope of his powers and functions.
