46.

asked the Minister for Lands what area of lands in the hands of his Department is available for planting; and if he will state the area offered for planting in the Thurles area, and the number of acres accepted.

In the Thurles area, the Forestry Division of my Department has acquired a total productive area of 385 acres for afforestation and of this a total of 101 acres has been planted to date. Further areas totalling 128 acres will be planted in the district in the current season.

Offers of land for forestry purposes totalling 1,685 acres have been received from 19 owners in the district. Agreement to purchase two areas totalling 342 acres has been reached and title is in course of clearance. Negotiations for the purchase of another area of 155 acres are in progress and preliminary investigations are being conducted in the remaining cases.
