Vol. 177 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Little Island (Cork) Schools.

56.

asked the Minister for Education if it is intended to proceed with the erection of new schools at Little Island, Glounthaune, in the immediate future; and if tenders have yet been invited for the work.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of erecting new national schools for boys and girls at Little Island, County Cork. This case has not yet reached the stage when tenders can be invited.

It was originally planned that the proposed new schools should have accommodation for 192 pupils in four classrooms. Following representations made to my Department in June, 1959, it was decided that accommodation for 208 pupils in five classrooms should be provided. I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that the preparation of revised working drawings is held up pending a decision as to the type of heating to be installed in the new schools. This matter is receiving urgent attention at present.
