Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New School Buildings.

104.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the estimated number of new school buildings in each local authority area at the latest available date; the number at present under construction; the number estimated to be completed in the present financial year; the estimated annual progress; and the estimated total capital requirements for fulfilment.

As the reply to this question includes detailed information some of which is in tabular form, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the official report.

Following is the statement:

NATIONAL SCHOOLS.

The attached statement shows the number of new national schools erected in each county during the year ended 31st December, 1959, and also the number of new national schools in course of construction on the 31st December, 1959. I regret that, as the records dealing with Primary Education are kept on a county basis, I am unable to give the information on the basis of each local authority area.

As regards the estimated annual progress in the provision of new national schools, my Department proposes to aim at an annual target of 100 new schools.

As regards the capital expenditure required for the replacement of existing unsuitable schools, it is estimated that a sum in the region of £6,000,000 will be needed but as pointed out to the Deputy in reply to his question of the 4th March, 1959, this is only a rough estimate.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS.

During the year ended 31st December, 1959, the building of six new vocational schools was completed: one in each of the local authority areas of Counties Donegal, Dublin, Kilkenny and Meath, and two in County Mayo.

There are at present eight new schools under construction, one each in the local authority areas of Counties Donegal, Dublin, Kerry, Kildare, Limerick, Longford, Westmeath and Tipperary (South Riding).

Progress in providing vocational schools is dependent on a variety of circumstances which make it difficult to forecast the number of schools which may be provided annually in the future. It is estimated, however, that the figure will not fall below six schools per year.

It is not possible to give an estimate of the total capital requirements for all future vocational school building development. It may be said, however, that new building projects which are at present under way, or are likely to commence within the next three years, will involve a capital outlay of some £1,600,000 within that period.

The above information is in respect of new national and vocational school buildings. Considerable capital expenditure will also be involved in the reconstruction and extension of existing schools.

(a) Number of new National Schools in each County the erection of which was completed in the year ended on 31st December, 1959.

(b) Number of new National Schools in course of erection on 31st December, 1959.
