Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Stations in Cork City and Suburbs.

32.

asked the Minister for Justice what Garda Stations in Cork City and suburbs are closed during the evening and night; what alternative protection has been provided for persons and property in the affected areas for the hours during which such stations are closed; and if he is satisfied that such protection is adequate.

Two suburban sub-districts, Blackrock and Douglas, are affected by the general closing arrangements which apply when small stations are operating at reduced strength. The closing of the stations does not mean that the members of the stations are not on duty during the closed hours. In fact, the purpose of the closing is to utilise to the best advantage the services of available station personnel for patrols and outdoor supervisory duties.

Local station parties carry out night patrols in the sub-districts mentioned in co-operation with a mobile patrol unit. I am not aware that the closing of the stations has resulted in inadequate protection. During the closed hours a notice is displaced in the stations indicating to callers where a member on duty can be found.
