Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Railways.

44.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state the mileage of railway lines which have been closed (a) by Córas Iompair Éireann and (b) by the Great Northern Railway Company within the State in 1957 and 1958, and by Córas Iompair Éireann in 1959.

No railway lines were closed by C.I.E. in 1957 or 1958. C.I.E. closed 98 miles of railway line in 1959 and 170¼miles since 31st December, 1959.

The Great Northern Railway Board closed 16¾ miles of railway line in 1957 and none in 1958.

Am I right in thinking that the Great Northern Railway had no statutory existence in 1959?

My figures presume the taking over of the Great Northern Railway by C.I.E.
