Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birr Family's Living Conditions.

66.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will cause immediate inquiries to be made into the living conditions of a young married man (name supplied), his wife and three young children, who are living in one small room in a house in High Street, Birr, Offaly, in which there are sixteen people residing; and if he will inquire into the justification of the local authority for refusing this man a house, having regard to the fact that the health of his children is in grave danger, that all his applications recently made for houses have been unsuccessful, and that persons were successful who had not the same deplorable and unsanitary living quarters; and if an inspector of his Department will call to investigate the matter.

The letting of housing accommodation provided under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts, subject to compliance with a scale of preferences prescribed by the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations, is a function of the housing authority concerned, in which I am not empowered to intervene. I understand that this family have been rehoused by the urban council in a council house at High Street, Birr.
