Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inchicore Dual Carriageway.

73.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the appalling condition for a major trunk road of the dual carriageway at Inchicore; and if he will accordingly ensure that it be forthwith put into repair.

A scheme to improve the drainage of the section of roadway in question, as a preliminary to its further improvement, has recently been completed. I understand that the preparation of contract documents for the general improvement of the road has reached an advanced stage, but that adequate time will have to be allowed for settlement of the drainage scheme before this further work is undertaken.

Could the Minister give any indication of what "adequate time" means?

I think about six months from the time of completion.

Is the Minister aware that the present condition of that road is so appalling that there will be a serious accident on it? Because the left-hand side of the dual carriageway in each direction is so bad, vehicles always drive on the right-hand side of the road? They cannot drive on the other.

I am so aware. It is because of that awareness that we are hoping to have these schemes gone ahead with in the near future.

Which local authority is responsible? It is being juggled about for years. Is it the corporation or the county council?

I think at least the corporation come into it in a big way. I suppose it depends on how far out the road you go.

The dual carriageway for this distance is under the same local authority.

If it is, it must be the corporation.

Would they seek to stop this Rip Van Winkle way of dealing with it?

They have, exactly. Are they working on it?

They had a watering can and a barrow and a shovel. That was their method of mending it.

They have completed the work.

I saw that yesterday morning myself.
