It was decided in connection with the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1959, that the money available for pensions increases should be expended on increases for the older pensioners who had retired before 1st November, 1952. The reasons for this step were fully explained to the House at the time. Further pensions increases for any class of State pensioners, which would require special legislation, must depend on whether moneys can be made available for this purpose, and this cannot be decided until various Budgetary matters have been considered.
