Vol. 180 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Free Airport Development Schemes.

25.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what developments are contemplated by the Shannon Free Airport Development Company, Limited; and if he will state the estimated number of new jobs which will be created in the industrial zone of the airport within the next five years.

The developments contemplated by the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited are the increased use of the Airport for traffic, freight, commercial and industrial purposes. Nine industrial projects have reached a stage in which production has either commenced or is likely to commence shortly. If the expectations of the promoters of these projects are realised employment will be given in the early stages to 700 workers and may ultimately reach 2,000.

A number of other industrial projects are in course of preparation by promoters but it is not possible to state how many of these will materialise or what will be the number of new jobs which these projects will create in the industrial zone in the next five years.

Could the Minister say if he has received any proposals in regard to the building of houses by the authority?

That is a separate question. If the Deputy puts down a question I shall be glad to answer it.
