Vol. 181 No. 5

Written Answers. - Income Tax Statistics.

29.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of gross profits and expenses under the main heads of (a) companies' profit before tax and (b) other profits, professional earnings, etc. in expansion of the figures given for the years 1957 and 1958 in Table A.1. of the Irish Statistical Survey, 1958.

The figures relating to companies' profits and other profits, professional earnings, etc. given in Table A.1. of the Irish Statistical Survey, 1958, are based mainly on figures for profits assessable for tax. The figures are, therefore, net of expenses. Since separate compilations are not made of the gross profits and the expenses it is not possible to give the information requested by the Deputy.

30.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give figures for a recent year of the amount claimed by individuals assessable under Schedules D and E in respect of business and suchlike expenses.

Statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to provide the information which the Deputy requests.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the estimated total earned income under all schedules assessable for income tax for 1958-1959, 1959-1960 and 1960-1961; (b) the aggregate amount for each of these years of the excess of £1,800 per annum belonging to individuals whose earned income exceeds £1,800 per annum; and (c) the estimated yield of income tax for each year in respect of the assessments under (a).

Income assessed under Schedules B and E is almost exclusively earned income. Income assessed under Schedule D includes earned income arising to an individual carrying on a trade, profession or vocation, as well as other income.

Particulars of the total income (both gross and actual) assessed under Schedules B and E are published in the Annual Reports of the Revenue Commissioners. Particulars of the total income assessed under Schedule D are also published in these Reports, but the relevant statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to indicate the apportionment of that total income between earned and unearned income.

The latest year for which firm figures of income assessed are available is 1957-58, but estimates have been made for 1958-59. The particulars for Schedules B and E are as follows:—

*Actual Income represents Gross Income less exemptions, reductions and discharges.

Statistics are not available which would enable the information requested at (b) to be given.

As regards (c) of the question, the net produce under Schedules B and E for 1957/58 (the latest year for which the information is available) is £100,900 and £7,176,600 respectively. The net produce under Schedule D for 1957/58 is £14,253,900, but it is not possible to apportion this figure between tax relating to earned income and tax relating to unearned income.
