Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Representations on London Neon Sign.

17.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for External Affairs when representations were made to the Australian High Commissioner in London concerning the neon sign in Piccadilly Circus which incorrectly includes a map of Ireland under the description "Britain"; and when a reply was received from the Australian authorities to such representations.

Representations were made on 11th November, 1960, and a reply was received on the same date.

Mr. Ryan

Is it not true to say that, when I asked this question last week and the Taoiseach said he could not say, he could then have given me the information which he has given in reply to the question today? Is it not a fact that the reason he did not give the information last week is that he did not want it known that the Minister for External Affairs and his Department had done nothing whatsoever about this objectionable sign which has been in Piccadilly Circus for several years until a Fine Gael backbencher put down a question to him?

The Deputy is making a speech.

I am sure the Deputy will not understimate his achievement.

Mr. Ryan

Nothing would have been done, and the Taoiseach told a lie about it.

The Deputy will withdraw the word "lie".

Mr. Ryan

If the rules of this House do not allow me to use it, I shall withdraw it, but the Taoiseach——

That is a qualification.

(Interruptions).

The Deputy will withdraw the word "lie" without qualification.

Mr. Ryan

I withdraw the word "lie" and substitute "deliberate concealment of the fact".

The Deputy is making the same statement in different words. He must withdraw it.

Mr. Ryan

The Taoiseach's own words condemn him. Therefore, I withdraw the word.

The Deputy will withdraw his remarks without qualification.

Mr. Ryan

It seems that I am compelled to do so and therefore I must and do withdraw it.

That is still qualified.

Mr. Ryan

I shall say it elsewhere.
