Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Traffic Prosecutions.

22.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the total number of prosecutions under the Road Traffic Acts during the years 1958, 1959 and 1960 to date in which a charge relating to driving or control of a mechanically propelled vehicle was pursued, (b) the number of convictions on such charges, (c) the number of cases in which sentences of imprisonment were imposed, and (d) the number of cases under each heading in which the persons charged were deemed to have been under the influence of intoxicating drink.

All the available figures relating to traffic offences for the years ended 30th September, 1958 and 30th September 1959 are included under various headings in the Crime Reports of the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, for those years. Copies of those reports have been laid on the Table of both Houses of the Oireachtas. The figures for the year ended 30th September, 1960, are not expected to be available for some months yet.

As I said in reply to a Question on the same lines last week, the tables compiled do not show how many of the convictions resulted in prison sentences and those figures could not be ascertained except with great difficulty. There are no figures available relating to the number of persons who were deemed to be under the influence of drink except the figures relating to prosecutions for drunken driving which I gave last week.
