Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Fund Improvement Grants.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government the type or types of road which qualify for improvement grants from the Road Fund.

Improvement Grants from the Road Fund are allocated to County Councils for Main and County roads and to Urban District Councils for urban roads. The Road Fund improvement grants allocated to county borough corporations are not specifically confined to any class of road but are intended for the more important traffic routes. The county borough corporations also get substantial grants from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote, which are not confined to any class of road.

Does that apply to what might be called main roads?

As a matter of fact, that is contained in the reply.

In the allocation of the grants is consideration given to the volume of traffic carried by the roads?

All such matters must naturally be taken into consideration where roads are competing with one another. That is inevitably the situation where there is less money than is demanded.
