Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance Cards Exchanged: New Cards Issued.

4.

asked the Taoiseach what are the figures for the number of insurance cards exchanged and new cards issued for the years 1959 and 1960 in the form set out in table 159 of the Statistical Abstract, 1959, including cards current (exchanged and issued).

The figures of Insurance Cards exchanged and issued, contained in the final column of Table 159 of the 1959Statistical Abstract refer, in the case of males to the period January, 1958 to January, 1959 and, in the case of females, to the period July, 1957 to July, 1958, corresponding to the different Insurance Years for males and females.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Offical Report, a statement showing the numbers of Insurance Cards exchanged and issued, for males in the period January, 1959 to January, 1960, and for females in the period July, 1958 to July, 1959. The numbers of Insurance Cards exchanged and issued for females in the period July, 1959 to July, 1960 are also given. The figures for cards exchanged and issued for males for the period January, 1960 to January, 1961 are expected to be available by March, 1961.

Is it not possible to get the figures for 1959 or for 1960 in the form set down in the Statistical Abstract of 1959, in Table 159?

All the figures available in the Statistics Branch are provided in the reply to the Deputy's Question. The figures for cards exchanged and new cards issued for males for the period January, 1960 to January, 1961 will not be available, I understand, until March, 1961.

I do not want to trouble the Parliamentary Secretary unduly. There is a figure given in that Table which is described as the figure for the number of insurance cards exchanged and new cards issued for the years 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958. I do not know where I can get the corresponding figure for 1959 and 1960 because the figures mentioned by the Parliamentary Secretary do not appear to provide them.

The Deputy is getting the figure for 1959 now.

They are segregated in males and females and appear from the Parliamentary Secretary's reply to be for somewhat different periods for males and females, but somewhere in the Statistical Abstract, they have provided a final figure which is described as the figure for cards exchanged and new cards issued. Yes? It appears in the last column.

The insurance year is different for males and females.

All I can tell the Taoiseach is that I copied it for the convenience of the Taoiseach from the Statistical Abstract. I want to get the comparable figure which the abstract, naturally, has not got but which ought to be available in the Statistics Office.

The Deputy is being given the most recent figures which include the figure for 1958-59 in the case of females. In addition, in the case of females, he can get, and is being given, the figure for 1959-60. Naturally, the figure for 1960 in respect of males is not available.

The Taoiseach has managed to give me a very comprehensive answer which excludes the only figure I wanted. Possibly it is not obtainable now.

I do not know what figure the Deputy wants.

The figure which appears in the last column of Table 159 of the Statistical Abstract, 1959, in respect of the years 1959 and 1960 because I already had it in respect of the years 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958.

In the case of males, the insurance year corresponds more or less with the calendar year— it is from January to January. The insurance year ends in January. In the case of females he cannot be given a figure on that basis. The insurance year for females is July to July. In respect of females, the Deputy is getting the figures for the 12 months July, 1958, to July, 1959, and also July, 1959, to July, 1960.

Does the Taoiseach not think it an odd thing that the Statistical Abstract in Table 159 contains a figure for 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958, which, apparently, is not obtainable for 1959 and 1960? Is that not odd?

I do not know that that is correct.

I assure the Taoiseach.

I am not certain on what basis the Statistical Abstract is made.

I do not know either, but there it is.

Anyway, the Deputy is getting the latest figure available.

I must try to take it up with the Director of Statistics.
