Vol. 186 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scholarships to Secondary Schools: Abolition of Means Test.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he will take steps to abolish the means test in respect of scholarships to secondary schools offered to pupils of national schools.

It is my intention to establish an extended scheme of scholarships tenable in post-primary schools. For this purpose, I hope to introduce a Bill at an early date in Dáil Éireann. I cannot at this stage make any statement which would anticipate the provisions of the Bill.

Do not tell me you are going to introduce a scholarship scheme.

Could the Minister say the number of students debarred by the means test?

Would the Minister say whether he or the county council imposes the means test?

The scheme is agreed to by the Minister.

Who arranges for the means test in the first place?

Wait until the next Fine Gael Ard Fhéis and you will get full details.

In connection with Question No. 32 on today's Order Paper, may I seek your permission, Sir, to raise this matter on the Adjournment, if not this evening then at the earliest possible date next week?

I shall communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise the subject matter of Questions Nos. 28, 29 and 30 on the Adjournment at some future date.

Would the Deputy say which Question. It is not usual for any more than one Question to be raised.

They were taken together today by the Minister.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
