Vol. 186 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Telephone Service.

43.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the very bad reception from telephone calls, both long distance and local, in the North County Wexford area; and if he will take steps to ensure that this unsatisfactory situation is remedied as soon as possible.

I am aware that there has been complaint of the kind mentioned by the Deputy affecting telephone calls in the North County Wexford area. The matter has been the subject of investigation but it has not so far been possible to eliminate the trouble. I am having a special examination made with a view to remedying the situation as early as possible.

Is the Minister aware that this trouble has persisted with trunk calls for six months and recently has extended to local calls? It is impossible to have a local call in North Wexford without the sound fading out from time to time. It is a very serious matter.

I am so aware. The engineers of the Department of Post and Telegraphs have been trying to eliminate the trouble and so far they have not been successful. It is an engineering difficulty of some description.
