The limited volume of business likely to be transacted would not warrant the establishment of a sub-post office at Monageer.
Is the Minister aware that the nearest post office to Monageer is five miles on one side to Enniscorthy and five miles on the other side to Ferns, and in view of the fact that this is a populous district, will he not reconsider the matter?
From the information supplied to me by the Department, I am satisfied that an office would not be warranted. The amount of business likely to be transacted in an office, if it were established there, would be so small that it would not be feasible to establish such an office.
Would the Minister consider installing a public telephone in Monageer?
According to the regulations that obtain at present, a telephone kiosk is not established where there is no sub-post office. Therefore, the only solution would be to have a coin box telephone if there was a shop in the district.
That is the very reason I am asking the Minister for a sub-post office. Further, I would respectfully draw his attention to the fact that though people have to walk from Ballybofey to Stranorlar, which is a distance of a quarter of a mile, in this case the distance is five miles.
The Deputy is not making a case for the establishment of a sub-post office.
The Post Office policy is to let them walk.
