Vol. 187 No. 9

Ceisteanna-Questions Oral Answers. - Gaeltarra Éireann Expenditure on Display Windows.

19.

asked the Minister for the Gaeltacht how much money was expended by Gaeltarra Éireann in 1957-58, 1958-59 and 1959-60 on the hire of space and time in display windows owned by outside commercial interests; and where those windows are situate.

Ní féidir an t-eolas atá á lorg ag an Teachta a thabhairt i leith na bliana 1957-58, tráth a bhí Seirbhisí na Gaeltachta faoi stiúradh mo Roinn-se, toisc nach bhfuil miontaifid an chaiteachais atá i gceist ar fáil anois. Bhí Gaeltarra Éireann i gcúram oifige sna blianta 1958-59 agus 1959-60 agus, ós rud é go mbaineann an gnó atá luaite ag an Teachta le mionchúrsaí trádála an Bhoird, ní mheasaim go mba chuí dom a iarraidh ar an mBord eolas ína thaobh a sholáthar.

Is it a fact that two Ministers are connected with these display windows which are taken up from time to time as the owners require by Gaeltarra Éireann?

Ní maith liom níos mó a rá go dtí go mbeidh tuille eolais agam.

It takes a long time to get this "tuille eolais".

This question was put down in English. Could we not have the reply in English?

The position is that Irish is the first official language of the House and the Minister is entitled to reply in that language.

Do you hear that, my lord?

I should like to know did the Minister say "yes" or "no". That is what I do not know.

What happens if a supplementary question is put to the Tánaiste or the Taoiseach in Irish?

They would get a weakness.

It appears from the reply that the Minister wishes to conceal from the House some of the facts which are clear to those who understand the language properly here.

He is doing that through the medium of Irish also.

He is using the language to conceal facts——

Isé an Teachta Ó Loingsigh a thosnaigh é.

That is not right.

Tú féin a thosnaigh é. Bhí sé ceart go leor nuair a bhí tusa sa Rialtas——

Not for the purpose for which it is being used now.
