Vol. 187 No. 9

Ceisteanna-Questions Oral Answers. - Home Assistance Officers' Salaries.

3.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give details of any recommendations he has received for adjustments in the salaries of home assistance officers in each county; the date on which he received each recommendation; the date on which each was dealt with; and whether he has sanctioned the proposed adjustments.

Proposals have been received from four local authorities for the application of a revised salary-scale of £476 by £34 to £816 per annum to their Assistance Officers. Applications from Monaghan County Council on the 28th March, 1960, and 26th April, 1960, for sanction to put that scale into operation from the 1st April, 1960, in respect of the 3 Assistance Officers employed by the Council were refused because no grounds were seen for authorising a special scale for the Monaghan Officers. The matter subsequently became the subject of a claim before the Labour Court by a Trade Union catering for the Assistance Officers. The County Manager informed the Court that he was prepared to offer the scale of £476 by £34 to £816 and to recommend it for payment by the Monaghan County Council and the Court recommended on the 4th November, 1960, that the Assistance Officers should accept the salary scale offered. On the 3rd January, 1961, the Monaghan County Council renewed its application for sanction for this scale.

Roscommon County Council applied on the 14th March, 1961, for sanction for the same scale to take effect from the 1st April, 1961. Wexford and Wicklow County Councils applied on the 13th March, 1961, and the 16th March, 1961, respectively for a similar sanction to take effect from the 1st August, 1960.

The question of approval of these proposals is at present under consideration.
